Topic: Human Rights Abuses in Israel and Palestine; A Comparative Analysis

Abstract: We will discuss human rights issues and violations that have taken place since the start of the 21st century in Israel and Palestine. We will divide our paper and presentation by beginning with a brief historical overview of the conflict. We will continue into violations committed by Israel, mostly focusing on the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and the impact of these settlements on civilians. We will then discuss violations committed by Palestine, focusing on Hamas, the PLO, and the First and Second Intifada.

Introduction: We will discuss human rights issues and violations that have taken place since the start of the 21st century in Israel and Palestine. We will divide our paper and presentation by beginning with a historical overview of the conflict, violations committed by Israel, those committed by Palestine and any historical details needed to understand the complexity of this conflict and the tie to human rights.

The Case: Our report and the human rights issues discussed will focus on those committed in the 21st century, since 2000, however, to truly understand these issues, the historical context given must go further back. We will briefly cover the Zionist movement, World War II the UN proposal of 1947 and Middle Eastern backlash, and changes to borders and areas of control from the Six-Day War to the present.

Human Rights Situation: The human rights situation in Israel/Palestine is complex and includes atrocities committed by both groups. Given the complexity, we will split this section into two main parts, one covering Israeli human rights offenses and one covering Palestinian offenses.

Section 1: This section will surround Israeli human rights offenses as well as the far-right ideological shift in the Israeli political sector. We will focus mostly on Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza as well as the impact of these settlements on Palestinian civilians.

Section 2: This section will discuss Palestinian human rights offenses. We will discuss organizations such as the PLO and Hamas and the actions they have taken in the 21st century as well as their impacts. We will also mention the First Intifada (1987-93) but focus more heavily on the Second Intifada taking place between 2000 and 2005.

Suggestions/Recommendations: In our individual papers, suggestions and recommendations will differ as we all have our own opinions on how this conflict and subsequent human rights offenses should be handled. In our group presentation, we will cover each of our suggestions briefly.

Conclusion: The conclusion will consist of an overview of the historical analysis, human rights situation and individual proposed solutions.
